Hey Everyone,
I’m sure most of you know about the coveted original OPI My Private Jet that was released sometime ago in 2007 and then was discontinued by the evil empire of OPI. Eventually MPJ was re-released, but it was obviously not the same as the original…not even close. The original MPJ was a a dark charcoal with amazing linear holo. I don’t have the original
but that is what I can tell from the swatches I’ve seen. I was under the impression that there were only two versions of MPJ, the original and the rerelease. Then I came across a post from The Trace Face Philes of a really great comparison of not two but THREE versions of OPI MPJ. I highly recommend checking it out especially if you have a version of MPJ and are unsure of which one.
I knew I didn’t have the original, I would have pooped my pants if I did, but after looking at Traci’s comparisons I knew that I had the current “yuk brown” version. This explained a lot to me, since I was a little let down on its expected awesomeness when I wore it for the first time.
My version of My Private Jet is a dark charcoalish brown with flecks of silver glitter and holo glitter….which is very sparse compared to the amazing linear holo in the original. I don’t think my version is ugly, but I don’t think it should have been labeled as MPJ when it barely has any resemblance of the original. Indoors MPJ is very flat. It just looks like a brownish polish with some silver flecks in it. You only see any holo or shimmer in direct sunlight, even then its kinda hard to see. I wish OPI at least threw in an extra dash of holo….the lack of it is pretty pathetic.
(Sorry for the subpar macro shot…it was impossible to get a close up showing the holo without the blur)
The positives about my version of MPJ is the application, the formula was great and covered in just two coats. I am still glad I have my bottle, it satisfies some curiosity…but definitely does not relieve me of my need to own the original MPJ. The following swatches are of two coats MPJ and a clear top coat.
(Blurred pic to show the somewhat existent holo glitter)
How about you? Do you have MPJ? If so, which one(s) and what do you think of them?

Well that’s disappointing! I was thinking, hoping, that I at least had the second version, but I think I have the yuk version!

I know what you mean…I kept staring at my bottle hoping for at least a blue fash, but nope…yuk it is.

Hello! There are actually at least six versions of OPI MPJ. I have the original charcoal/black version holo,a brown holo, the yuk brown, the teal flash version, and a grayish holo as well. There is also one like the yuk brown but it is black instead of brown.I dont have that one.The versions i do have are all completely different.Of course OPI claims that there are not different versions of this polish

Why do nail polish companies release multiple ‘dud’ versions of one polish? Drives me crazy. I think it also happened with Not Like the Movies and Planks a Lot (according to MUA, anyway). This charcoal-brown version of MPJ doesn’t look so bad on its own, but just knowing there is a true jet black version floating around in the wider polish universe raises my expectations for it.

Yea it’s very frustrating especially if you have no idea there are different versions and its not what you were expecting. Once a shade’s formula is altered it shouldn’t be rereleased under the same name because its not going to fool many people for long.

I don’t have this one but I think it’s really beautiful in all versions I’ve seen!

Its worth picking up even if its not the original, as long as your not expecting it to blow your mind.

It might not be as holo as one would hope, but I still think it’s very pretty! But then, I’ve always been a sucker for yuk browns and other swampy, murky colors. So I kind of like all three versions… but agree that the original was the best.

Yea, I’m still happy I have it and can appreciate it as the “ugly” step sister

Aw I wish I had the original. I always hear good things about that one. This one still looks nice and I’m glad you say the application was good

Maybe there’s still a few unclaimed bottles floating around waiting to find a home, our homes in particular

Eh. I don’t like the rerelease, it is just so… lackluster. Then again, I prefer my browns to be cremes, anyway.

Not nearly as exciting as the original, I agree.

I am lucky enough to own one of the original holo versions of MPJ, but mine is a brown holo, not black. I love it! My blog post on MPJ is here if you want to see what it looks like: http://www.parisianbluesky.com/2012/06/take-ride-on-my-private-jet.html

I also have the original MPJ that I bought from a beauty express years ago. Mine has a dark charcoal grey base color with an extreme rainbow holo. I rarely wear it though, as I try to save it for special occasions lol. I think your version is pretty too though, I like the brown tinge

Hello
,
I didn’t even know that OPI released a new My private Jet. From the pictures looks the same. I also did some swatches of the MPJ old version, see it here http://www.fashionglow.ro/?p=1573
Is not a big difference
